Countries that are situated in the developing world host major international summits mostly due to the symbolic significance and associated political cum diplomatic gains. For Sri Lanka to host such a summit is of even more importance, because Sri Lankan government has received stringent criticism and even mild sanctions from the West for its human rights violations during its war with LTTE. For Sri Lankan government hosting a Commonwealth summit in Colombo implies, at best, international legitimacy for its actions during the civil war and at worst the West’s reconciliation to ground realities in island state.
The ‘ethnic question’ in Sri Lanka, even after the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), evokes a sense of suspense, uncertainty and even a possible conflict of interest in the otherwise robust and multifaceted relationship between India and Sri Lanka. Many parties in Tamil Nadu are vocal champions of Sri Lankan Tamils and formidable opposition by political parties has ensured that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s trip to the island nation to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is all but off, speculating to gain political edge before the 2014 polls. The winter session of the TN Assembly even passed a unanimous resolution moved by state government opposing even titular representation at the meet. Even small parties make token noises to gain in the elections. When India’s diplomatic relation with Sri Lanka comes to the fore, emotional play by regional political parties in India create hiccups to proceed with any agenda, and it seems that at times they sacrifice national interests for political gains. For instance, when Sri Lankan government was waging a war with the LTTE, many political parties of Tamil Nadu asked the centre to intervene in the issue to stop the alleged slaughtering of innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka. The State Government even asked for the Indian armed forces to intervene. The political ally of UPA government threatened to break away from the UPA routinely, but did not. Ministry of External Affairs said that in 10 summit level meetings since 1993, the Prime Minister represented India five times while on four occasions; ministers had headed the Indian delegation vindicating the present stand of Government of India.
India’s national interests that must be held supreme in dictating its foreign policy and no concern for Sri Lankan Tamil interests can supersede that. From early 1950’s India incorporated “Panchasheel Principles” in its foreign policy and advocated it too. So as one of the five principles say “Mutual non-interference in each other’s internal matters”, India shouldn’t be bothered about what some state political parties dictate to Union Government to do in its foreign policy. Meanwhile Sri Lanka is also cozying up with China, which only giving headaches to Delhi vindicating so called “String of Pearls Theory” i.e China is surrounding India by building economic and social infrastructure in India’s neighboring countries ,building ports in Chittagong(Bangladesh) , Sittwe (Myanmar),Hambantota(Sri Lanka) and Gwadar port in Pakistan. Can you imagine how china had encircled India? In case of war china would be having a leverage over India in every case.India should respect it’s neighbors sensitivities and interests for it’s own good.
String Of Pearls Theory
India needs a smart balanced foreign policy w.r.t Indian Ocean Region, as China is aggressively playing in Indian Ocean region diplomatically and Militarily.India shouldn’t repent afterwards if situation slips out of hand.So India must overcome mutual prejudices and chauvinism and concentrate on creating a fine balance between mutual interests.

After finishing work in the Office at 6:30PM,I reached the nearest bus stop near Forum Mall,Bengaluru. As i was waiting to catch the bus to go back to home, a cab stopped near the bus stop, where a man sitting inside was shouting majestic, majestic……. i thought for a second and hopped in to the cab so that i can reach home early. The cab driver switched on the FM Radio and tuned to a channel,i was listening to conversation going on over the radio.after listening to that conversation,i was shocked and said wtf?(sic!)It was a prank plan conversation by the host RJ.
Well the conversation is here.its between RJ(Who was pretending to be a HR of a company) and a girl searching for a job.
RJ: Hello, may i speak to XYZ?
Girl:Yeah! Who’s this?
RJ: Are you looking for a job?
Girl:Yeah, i am
RJ: We have a vacancy at our company, its basically a multi-tasking job.so would you like to join?
Girl: Can i call you in the night?
RJ: No! No! my wife will doubts me.So you talk now if you can
RJ: You job is to “scratch my back whenever it itches me there”
Girl: Hmmm.. Yeah when shall i join the job?
RJ: Are you sure ?You want to join the job because you need to sign the job before joining.
Girl:Yeah i am ready! just tell me when i can join ?
RJ:(Finally!might have thought the conversation is going the other way) This is RJ”asdf” calling from “zxcv” FM.
I just wondered how desperate the world is to get a job of any kind and of any profile! was it desperation? or something else?
i had heard relatively this sort of stories from friends earlier but i never believed them.i think i was wrong that time..In the what matters is whatever we do,whether we get satisfaction or not? So who knows, what kind of job satisfaction people want? as we can’t enforce our ideologies and opinions on others.
